How we are reducing our environmental impact
12 Dec 2024Behind the scenes
Our company produces plastic housewares, and we are well aware of how plastic in the collective imagination is linked to environmental impact. This is why we have been pursuing a very active company policy to reduce our carbon footprint for years.
Energy saving is one of the first aspects on which we have acted. Any production process requires energy: light, heat, electricity. We find it essential to optimise its use and limit consumption. In detail:
- We equipped our factory with a photovoltaic system back in 2008, well before the energy bill. Part of the energy we use for the production of our household goods therefore comes from renewable sources.
- We have installed a system that can detect the consumption of each plant in the factory. We can therefore monitor the energy consumption of each individual machine in real time and in a statistical manner. This certainly helps us to keep production costs under control, but also to monitor energy efficiency.
In this regard, we recently replaced one of our machines with a new, much more energy-efficient press. The newly installed machine consumes one third of the energy of its predecessor, leading to significant cost and energy efficiency savings.
From a production point of view, we do not generate plastic waste that is destined to become waste. As we have explained in more detail in this article, each scrap is fed back into our production process according to two possible procedures: colour recycling or mixed granulate.
Linked to this are further actions we are taking to reduce our environmental impact. We refer to all the research and production work on the Utilgreen line, which we have been carrying out since 2010.
Utilgreen is our housewares line made from post-consumer plastics. In fact, our company was one of the first to collaborate with companies and research institutions in the area to make it possible to produce housewares from recycled plastic. From the search for the perfect mixture for correct moulding to the creation of a proper line, today we are still looking ahead.
One of the next challenges to reduce the environmental impact of our products concerns biodegradable plastic. To date, our research has already resulted in some bioplastic housewares, in particular our bio plastic brush, which is the result of new collaborations and a constant desire to innovate by improving our production.
